Stefan Obmann

Stefan Obmann, born 1988 in St. Veit an der Glan (Carinthia), began his musical education at the age of five years at the Music School of Althofen.

He studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Dietmar Küblböck (Wiener Philharmoniker) and Mark Gaal (Wiener Philharmoniker). In 2006 he won the Anton Bruckner Competition of the Wiener Symphoniker in the category "Best Young Trombonist". He is also a prizewinner of the competition Gradus ad Parnassum 2011.

He played as a guest with renowned orchestras like the Wiener Philharmoniker, Wiener Symphoniker, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Staatskapelle Berlin, Radio- Symphonieorchester Wien, Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, and at the Oper Frankfurt, Volksoper Wien and Wiener Staatsoper with conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Ádám Fischer, Riccardo Muti, Kirill Petrenko, Georges Prêtre and Christian Thielemann and with ensembles such as phil Blech Wien and Federspiel.

Stefan Obmann is also ensemble manager for the trombone quartet Trombone Attraction and the Vienna Brass Connection.

In addition to various teaching activities, a lectureship at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien and numerous concerts with various ensembles such as Trombone Attraction, the Vienna Brass Connection and orchestras such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, contemporary music is one of the main focuses of his artistic work. He regularly performs in projects with Klangforum Wien, Ensemble XXI. Jahrhundert, Ensemble Weiner Collage und dem Schallfeld Ensemble Graz and is a member of the PHACE ensemble, one of the most successful and innovative ensembles for new music.

Stefan Obmann came to my class as a fourteen-year-old up-and-coming talent, and since then I have followed his musical development with great interest. Apart from his extraordinarily rapid instrumental progress, he attracted attention very early on with his innovative views. His special interest in various areas of trombone playing (from early to contemporary music, solo, chamber music, as well as in the orchestra) has always distinguished him. His efforts to make the trombone known to a broad, especially young, public as a solo instrument are worthy of special mention. Thus he makes an important contribution to the mediation of art.
